Enterprising Engineering Students Take Top Prize

The annual Doncaster College enterprise event ‘Make It Happen!’ saw two Engineering students take the top prize of £300 for their lockable mobile phone charging station. This award was sponsored by Doncaster College and Association of Colleges Yorkshire & Humber.

The ‘Power Up’ group designed and made a prototype which can be used at different locations to charge mobile phones whilst giving users the security of their mobile phone being safely locked away.

Students Makaiko Gondwe and Ross Thomas used computer software programmes, planned to meet their specification and researched ideas to ensure that the product would work and could ultimately make money.

Students from all curriculum areas took part in the event giving the judges the difficult job of awarding ‘golden tickets’ to shortlist groups. Shortlisted groups included students from Travel & Tourism, Life Skills and Business with ideas for child safety devices, a craft business and student friendly breakfast products.

Chair of the Judging Panel, Catherine Jones, Business Coach and Training Manager at Smith Craven, noted the originality of all the entries but explained the judges were particularly impressed with the ‘Power Up’ Engineering students who also won the Enterprise Award sponsored by Campus Coffee.
