Inspirational Bodybuilding Sports Tutor Returns to Compete

Posted: June 6th 2017

John Heaton, sports tutor at Doncaster College & former International Natural Bodybuilder World Champion, is set to return to the Natural Physique Association Yorkshire Championships after 6 years out and 4 operations. The 45 year old has endured 16 weeks of tough preparation and set out to lose a stone and a half ready for the event, which takes place on Saturday 27th May at Unity Works in Wakefield.

From obesity in his 20s, to world champion in 2011, John thought the biggest hurdles were over. But between 2013 and 2016, he faced some big setbacks as he underwent 4 major operations. In just 3 years he suffered a snapped bicep, arthritic foot and reconstruction to both his shoulder and knee. “I felt like the decision to retire had been made for me rather than making that conscious decision myself”, explains John.

Despite his health, John refused to give up. “Even with a cast on I still continued to train. If I hadn’t achieved 3000 steps each day, I would hobble around my estate on my crutches.” Despite the scars of his operation, John proudly claims he’s in the best shape of his life now.

Juggling his time between teaching at college, personal training and coaching BATLEY Bulldogs’ rugby team in strength & conditioning, John prides himself in being a good role model to his students. “My students know I practice what I preach. My real life experience means I can back up the theory I teach, which is quite often out of the books”.

“His passion for health, fitness and strength coaching clearly comes through in his teaching. Thanks to John I have that same passion and strive to help and support others in the same way,” Helen Laycock, former student.

After passing Level 2 Gym and Level 3 Personal Training with us last year, Helen went on to secure herself a successful personal training career. Is sport a career you’re interested in? To find out more about the sports courses we offer, click here.
