BA (Hons) English host Short Fiction webinar to celebrate UK Northern Authors Day!

Posted: July 3rd 2020

In celebration of UK Northern Authors Day, the BA (Hons) English team hosted a Short Fiction webinar on Wednesday 1st July. The panel included author of Dust Mark Thompson, and our very own level six student Ryan Boshell.

The interactive webinar provided attendees the opportunity to ask Mark and Ryan questions about characterization, plot, and what inspired them. The relaxed, informal format resulted in more than a few laughs and positive feedback from all.

“Brilliantly inspiring, perfectly organized, and so much fun!” reported one attendee. Another remarked, “It was very interesting and informative. I look forward to attending future webinars.”

Ryan, who is due to graduate this year, expressed his appreciation for the value of the Short Fiction module delivered at level 6. Dr. Simon Stevenson who teaches the module was also on the panel and gave an overview of the scope of short fiction as a genre.

“There’s something culturally important about short fiction, and the more people that do it the better the world would be” Ryan suggested. Judging from the amount of attendees who are already engaged in writing short fiction, and the sense of community in last night’s webinar, Ryan does seem to have a point.

Simon and Mark have both been instrumental in Ryan’s development as a writer. Mark, who has been mentoring Ryan is an advocate of the programme, having delivered a creative writing workshop last year and is a participant in our monthly Open Mic night.

“If I was younger, I would enroll on the programme!” Mark concluded.

The BA (Hons) English degree which is validated by the University of Hull has no upper age restrictions and we still have places for September 2020 enrolment! For more information about the programme, contact the Programme Leader heather.thaxter01@don.ac.uk

If you missed the webinar, it will be soon be accessible to view on our Facebook page.
